An engines cam timing chain or cam gears do wear considerably and it is not uncommon for an engine to have two or three timing chain / gear set replacements with in the normal operating life of the engine.

Worn timing chains cause retarded valve timing events which is detrimental to producing good engine torque and can lead to premature camshaft and lifter wear because of erratic camshaft motion due to the slack chain or worn gears.
